Bondar Junto Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2018

Bondar Junto is a Grenache-led blend of southern Rhône varieties from McLaren Vale.

The name is Spanish for together, which is the whole idea: Grenache at 70 per cent as the lead, Shiraz at 20 adding flesh, Mataro at nine bringing spice and tannin, and a single per cent of Counoise for detail. The Grenache comes from three blocks, most of it from the estate's own Rayner Vineyard, plus a grower five kilometres away at McLaren Flat and another near Tatachilla. The Shiraz is Rayner fruit too; the Mataro comes off the famed Kurrajong soils in the foothills of Willunga, and the Counoise from young Rayner plantings. All wild-fermented with about 20 per cent whole bunches and raised in old oak.

Lively and energetic, with red cherry, raspberry and a peppery savoury edge, restraint being the whole point. Serve at 16 degrees, or a touch cooler in summer. Roast chicken, lamb skewers, or a plate of charcuterie.
