Bondar Junto Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2021

Bondar Junto is a Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro blend from McLaren Vale, with a little Carignan.

McLaren Vale spent decades making big reds, and this wine belongs to the change of direction: Grenache at 73 per cent, Shiraz at 13, Mataro at 12 and a touch of Carignan, all handled for freshness and drinkability. The Grenache comes from three blocks, led by the estate's Rayner Vineyard with an eighty-year-old parcel at McLaren Flat and fruit from Trott Wilpena in Blewitt Springs. Shiraz is Rayner again, from seventy-year-old sand-grown vines, and the Mataro is off the Kurrajong soils near Willunga. Wild ferments, roughly 20 per cent whole bunches, eight months in old oak.

Red-fruited and racy, with spice, dried orange peel and fine tannin, finishing clean and dry. Serve at 16 degrees. Grilled lamb, chicken thighs with paprika, or a simple pizza; a slight chill suits it on a hot day.
