Bondar Junto Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2022

Bondar Junto is a McLaren Vale blend led by Grenache with a larger share of Shiraz than usual.

Shiraz steps up to 21 per cent in 2022, alongside Grenache at 62, Mataro at 15 and a dab of Carignan, giving a slightly broader and meatier version of the wine. The Grenache comes mostly from Rayner, with the balance from the Trott Wilpena and Slattery vineyards in Blewitt Springs, both on the deep sands the district is known for. The Shiraz is home-grown on seventy-year-old sand-rooted vines, and the Mataro comes from the Kurrajong soils in the Willunga foothills. Fruit was wild-fermented with about 20 per cent whole bunches and given eight months in old oak, with no new wood involved.

Plenty of energy here: red and black cherry, pepper, a savoury herbal note and soft tannin. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Barbecued lamb, a mushroom and lentil stew, or pork sausages with plenty of mustard.
