Bondar Junto Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2023

Bondar Junto is a Grenache-led red blend from the cool 2023 McLaren Vale vintage.

2023 was the coolest season McLaren Vale had seen in decades, which suits this wine, since lifted aromatics and firm acid are exactly what Andre and Selina chase. Grenache makes up 65 per cent, Shiraz 16, Mataro eight and Carignan three. Most of the Grenache is off Rayner, with the rest from Trott Wilpena and Slattery in Blewitt Springs; the Shiraz comes from seventy-year-old sand-grown Rayner vines, and the Mataro from the Kurrajong soils under Willunga. Everything fermented on wild yeasts with about 20 per cent whole bunches and spent eight months in old oak before blending.

Lifted and fine, with redcurrant, pomegranate, white pepper and a dry savoury close. Serve at 16 degrees, lightly cool. Roast chicken, lamb koftas, or a dish of white beans and herbs; it is a good glass on its own too.
