Bondar Junto Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2024

Bondar Junto is a Grenache-led McLaren Vale blend carrying the highest Mataro proportion yet bottled.

Warm conditions in 2024 brought the Mataro up to a standard Andre had not seen before, so it takes 12 per cent here, more than in any earlier release, alongside Grenache at 78 and Shiraz at 10. The Grenache comes from two sites now: mostly Rayner, with support from a deep sandy block in Blewitt Springs. Shiraz is home-grown on seventy-year-old sand-rooted vines, and the Mataro comes off the Lacey vineyard in the Willunga foothills, on the rocky Kurrajong soils. Indigenous yeasts throughout, then eight months in old oak. Grenache leads, Shiraz gives roundness, Mataro gives spine.

Juicy and lifted, with raspberry, plum and a warm spice edge, closing dry and savoury. Serve at 16 degrees, or slightly chilled. Works with barbecued lamb, roast capsicum, or a chorizo and chickpea stew; it will also carry hard cheese.
