Bondar Rayner Vineyard Grenache 2025

Bondar Rayner Vineyard Grenache is an old-vine McLaren Vale Grenache with a small parcel of young bush vines in support.

Drought cut 2025 yields by half, so Andre Bondar brought in roughly 30 per cent fruit from young bush vines upslope to sit alongside the 1970 material — the younger component lending lift, the old vines the depth and power. At its heart is still the deep sand along the vineyard's western edge, Pirramimma sandstone country, farmed organically without irrigation; the rows face east, so the vines escape the harshest summer sun and set small, concentrated bunches of their own accord. Cellar work is minimal as ever — a fifth of the crop fermented on its stems, half a year split between ceramic and French wood, and no fining or filtration before bottling.

Bright red fruit and dried herb over a firmer core than the perfume suggests, finishing dry and mineral. Serve at 16 degrees. Lamb backstrap, a slow-braised shoulder of goat, or grilled mushrooms with thyme and garlic.
