Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2024

Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a textbook Coonawarra red, and the 2024 marks the family's 50th vintage.

The first Bowen Estate vintage was made in 1975, a few years after Doug Bowen planted vines on a block of red soil in Coonawarra. Fifty harvests on, the family still grows and makes the wine themselves. The region's narrow band of red earth over limestone, cooled by Southern Ocean air, produces Cabernet of intensity and fine-grained tannin, and the estate's approach remains straightforward: careful vineyard work, hand pruning and oak that supports the fruit. The 2024 opens with blackberry and tobacco leaf, and the palate brings density, balance and a long, gently savoury finish.

It drinks well now, yet it is clearly built for the cellar. Pour at 16 to 18 degrees with a rare rib-eye, rosemary lamb cutlets or an aged cheddar.
