Description
Brendan Stater-West Les Chapaudaises is a lieu-dit Saumur Blanc from the oldest and least productive Chenin vines on the site.
Stater-West works in Saumur alongside Romain Guiberteau, leasing a hectare of Chenin Blanc in Les Chapaudaises at Épieds, near Brézé. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 2010 and, as he puts it, is finely tuned for the style of Chenin he is after: elegant, pure, vertical, with salinity from the limestone. He picks slightly earlier than Guiberteau does at Clos de Guichaux and works with fewer lees than his colleague, which gives a leaner, more cut-glass wine. The fruit fermented naturally in stainless steel and then aged 14 months in used large-format barrels sourced from Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau. There is no new oak, and the wine keeps a firm phenolic edge alongside its fruit.
Drinking now and will develop for eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork belly or a soft goat's cheese.
