Brokenwood Cabernet Merlot 2023

Brokenwood Cabernet Merlot is a Bordeaux-style red that pairs the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the softness of Merlot.

Although the company is best known for Hunter Valley Semillon and Shiraz, Brokenwood has long looked beyond Pokolbin for fruit suited to particular styles, and this blend draws on McLaren Vale in South Australia. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, bringing cedar, blackcurrant and a leafy hint of sage, while Merlot fills out the middle of the palate with sweet fruit and a plush feel. Maturation in French oak adds a background of vanillin and nutmeg that frames the fruit without taking over. The colour is medium to deep with purple hues, and fine tannins carry through to the finish. Sealed under screw cap, it drinks well young and will hold for several years.

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, beef and mushroom pie or a sharp aged cheddar. Approachable now, it will also reward a few years in the cellar.
