Description
Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is the flagship red of one of the Hunter Valley's most celebrated wineries, grown on a single vineyard at Pokolbin.
The vineyard takes its name from early plans to use the land as a cemetery for Pokolbin, plans that never went ahead. Instead it became one of the great Shiraz sites of the Hunter, and since 1983 its best fruit has been bottled on its own as a single-vineyard wine. The style is true to the region: savoury, medium in weight and built on fine, natural acidity. Here the use of large-format oak, all French and very little of it new, lets the red-spiced Hunter fruit lead, and the supple palate has no hard edges, with ripe tannins, juicy acidity and oak in harmony.
Now more than ten years old, this wine is moving into its mature drinking window. Stand the bottle upright for a few hours, decant gently to leave any sediment behind and serve at 16 to 18 degrees. Roast lamb, duck with cherries or a mushroom and thyme pie will suit its savoury character, and it should hold well for several more years.
