Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2019

Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is the flagship red of the Hunter Valley winery, grown on a single block at Pokolbin.

The vineyard earned its name because the land was once set aside as a local cemetery, a plan that never came to pass. Instead it became one of the most revered Shiraz sites in the region, and the wine is regarded as a benchmark for Hunter reds. Winemaking is designed to let the site speak: maturation in large-format French oak keeps wood flavour in check so the red spice and bramble fruit of Hunter Shiraz comes through clearly. The 2019 follows a fine 2018 with a supple, complete palate that flows from start to finish, and bright natural acidity underpins its structure and carry. Subtle, but with real power.

Give it time in the cellar, or decant for an hour if opening soon. Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with rare roast beef, duck with cherries or a hard aged cheese.
