Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2021

Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is a single-site Hunter Valley Shiraz and the most celebrated red in the Brokenwood stable.

Once earmarked as the site for a cemetery, this Pokolbin block was planted to Shiraz instead and has become one of the great vineyards of the Hunter, followed closely by collectors from vintage to vintage. The approach in the winery is deliberately restrained, with large French oak vessels chosen so that the oak supports the fruit and leaves the red spice and bramble character in charge. The 2021 is a classic medium-weight Hunter style: supple and complete on entry, with fine, long tannins, persistent length and an acid line that carries it through. It is built to develop further with age.

Lay it down for the long haul if you can. When opening, allow some air and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with slow-braised beef cheeks, venison or a mushroom and thyme pie.
