Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is the top single-vineyard red from Brokenwood, drawn from a historic block in the heart of Pokolbin.

Few Australian vineyards carry the reputation of this site, which takes its unusual name from land originally reserved for a cemetery. The warm Hunter Valley climate produces Shiraz of medium weight and savoury perfume, and this wine is one of the clearest expressions of that regional style. In 2022 a bright, mid-density colour is matched by red spice and bramble fruit, with a supple palate and noticeable mid-palate sweetness that carries through to the finish. Natural acidity and fruit sweetness together underpin the length, and the tannins are fine and long. Elegant now, it will only gain complexity with time.

For drinking over the next decade and beyond, cellar it well and open with plenty of time to breathe. It sits beautifully with a lamb rack, roast quail or a mushroom risotto, served at 16 to 18 degrees.
