Brokenwood Hunter Valley Shiraz 2023

Brokenwood Hunter Valley Shiraz is a regional Shiraz that captures the savoury, medium-weight style Hunter reds are known for.

Pokolbin has been home base since the winery was founded in 1970 by a trio of Sydney lawyers, among them the wine writer James Halliday. This bottling brings together Hunter Valley fruit to show the region's signature: red to dark red fruits, ginger spice and fine, ripe tannins. The winemaking deliberately keeps oak impact low, with a portion of new oak adding just a slight vanillin sweetness to complement the berry fruit. Ripe tannins and natural acidity combine for a very long finish, and the team rates 2023 as a very good year for the style.

Open it now with a steak sandwich or grilled lamb cutlets, or cellar it for the medium to long term. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees.
