Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2013

Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon is a Hunter Valley Semillon released only from the best vintages, and only after years in bottle.

The wine honours Iain Leslie Riggs, who joined Brokenwood in 1982 and helped build it into a national and international name. Hunter Semillon is one of Australia's great wine styles: picked early, low in alcohol, made without oak and then left to evolve slowly in bottle. ILR is held back at the winery for around six years before release, and this 2013 came out at six years of age with the first yellow tints of development. Almond bread, beeswax and toast are starting to join the lime juice freshness and zesty acidity of youth, and the wine has the texture, fruit weight and length that mark a top Hunter Semillon.

Serve chilled but not too cold, around 10 degrees, so the developed character can show. It is lovely with crab, scallops, smoked trout or tarragon chicken. Already mature, it can be enjoyed now, though good Hunter Semillon is famously long-lived.
