Byrne Farm 'Glenidle Vineyard' Pinot Noir 2023

Byrne Farm 'Glenidle Vineyard' Pinot Noir is the first release from the family's own high-altitude vineyard at Nashdale in Orange.

Years as chief winemaker at Agnew Wines taught Jeff Byrne what fruit from this genuinely cool region could do, so when the family made their tree change in 2019, nowhere else was considered. Glenidle — once a working orchard, with some trees still bearing — sits at 900 to 950 metres on the northern flank of Mount Canobolas, planted to three hectares of Chardonnay and two of Pinot Noir in chocolate ferrosol. The clonal mix is deliberate: Abel and 115 for colour and structure, 777 and 667 for perfume, 114 for drive. A cold, late season meant a long hang, and the first crop ran to just two tonnes.

Deeply coloured for Orange Pinot, with red and dark cherry, a woodsy note from the token whole-bunch portion, and the acid line that altitude guarantees. Ten months in seasoned French wood has left it unforced. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with duck breast, roast pork and fennel, or a mushroom tart.
