Byrne Farm Pinot Noir Shiraz 2020

Byrne Farm Pinot Noir Shiraz is a light-framed Orange red blend, the only wine made in a difficult season.

2020 was the warmest year on record in Orange, and between the bushfires and the pandemic it was a hard vintage to finish. Pinot yields were tiny and the juice came in with thick-skinned colour and concentration outside the style Jeff Byrne wants from the variety, so he made one wine instead — 88 per cent Pinot Noir from Springvale with 12 per cent Shiraz off 22-year-old vines of the old 1654 clone at 680 metres. Twenty years in the Hunter Valley gave him the blend to fall back on. Both parcels were fully destemmed, cold-soaked three days and aged nine months in French puncheons.

Dark cherry and blue fruit with savoury spice, florals and a lick of black olive. Crunchy mulberry fruit, fine bones, and just 12 per cent alcohol, so it goes down easily. Serve at 15 degrees with roast duck, char siu pork, or a coarse pork terrine.
