Byrne Farm Shiraz Pinot Noir 2021

Byrne Farm Shiraz Pinot Noir is a Shiraz-led blend nodding to two decades in the Hunter Valley.

After the one-off Pinot-dominant blend of 2020, the ratio swings to what Jeff Byrne says should be the norm from here: 90 per cent Shiraz and 10 per cent Pinot Noir. The Shiraz grows on 22-year-old vines at a lower Orange site, 680 metres up, warm enough to ripen the variety properly, while the Pinot comes from Springvale, the same block behind the straight varietal. Both parcels were destemmed, cold-soaked four days and fermented on skins for ten days, then pressed to 500-litre barrels with ten per cent new oak for ten months before blending. Shiraz with Pinot is old Hunter practice, and it works here.

Bright and lively, loaded with summer berries and baking spice over a savoury mineral edge. Pristine acidity, a slippery mid-palate and perfumed length. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Lamb off the barbecue, roast duck, or grilled field mushrooms.
