Byrne Farm Syrah 2022

Byrne Farm Syrah is a Shiraz-led blend with Pinot Noir, now bottled simply under the French name.

The blend runs 86 per cent Shiraz and 14 per cent Pinot Noir, a straight nod to Jeff Byrne's Hunter Valley years. Shiraz comes from 22-year-old vines at 680 metres in Orange, low enough in the district to ripen fully, and the Pinot from 23-year-old Springvale vines outside Cargo. Both are destemmed, cold-soaked four days, fermented ten days on skins, then pressed to 500-litre barrels with ten per cent new oak for ten months before blending. He calls 2021 and 2022 two peas in a pod, and the wines bear that out — this is the crunchier of the pair.

More brightness this year, a touch more mineral, a smidge more crunch, over dark berry fruit and cracked pepper. Reach for a wide glass and serve at 16 degrees. Anything to do with duck, or whatever comes off the barbecue.
