Ca' d'Gal Moscato d'Asti Vite Vecchia 2015

Ca' d'Gal Vite Vecchia is a Moscato d'Asti drawn from a single hectare of sixty-year-old vines on the Valdivilla hillside.

Moscato d'Asti is Piedmont's lightly sparkling, low-alcohol sweet white, made from Moscato Bianco grown in the hills between Asti and Alba and bottled with the ferment stopped early to hold natural sugar and a gentle frizzante. Sandro Boido works at Valdivilla, in the commune of Santo Stefano Belbo, and has spent his career arguing that the appellation deserves the same seriousness given to the region's reds. Vite Vecchia comes from one steeper, limestone-rich parcel of about a hectare above the cellar, planted to the old Canelli cultivar of Moscato by Boido's grandfather some sixty years ago. The southerly aspect and blue tufa soils of clay and limestone give small, deeply flavoured golden bunches, and the wine carries more textural depth and vinosity than the style usually offers, with a smoky, mineral cast. Bottles are matured in the old local manner, stored on cork in large wooden boxes packed with sand, which steadies temperature and humidity and blocks out light before release.

It drinks beautifully on release and, unusually for the style, holds for several years. Good with stone-fruit tarts, panettone or a wedge of blue cheese; serve at 8-10°C.
