Camille Giroud Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023

Camille Giroud Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a powerful, dry white from the upper slopes of the hill of Corton in the Côte de Beaune.

Above the villages of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix, a band of vines on pale marl and limestone faces west to south. It's high enough that the fruit ripens slowly and keeps its acidity, which is why these wines take their time to unwind. The house buys from growers on the hill and vinifies each parcel separately in Beaune. Whole-bunch pressing, wild-yeast fermentation in barrel and a long élevage on lees in French oak, only part of it new, produce a white built for the cellar.

Broad and mineral, with serious concentration and length under a still-tight surface. Decant young bottles or leave them in the cellar. At 11–13°C it's excellent with lobster, scallops, poultry in cream or a hard mountain cheese.
