Candea Blanco 2020

Candea Blanco is Quinta da Muradella's entry-level white, an equal blend of three Galician varieties grown near the Portuguese border.

Like the red, Candea Blanco is sourced from the Monterrei vineyards of Juan Jose Vilela, a close friend of Jose Luis Mateo and now a collaborator. The Vilela family was once one of the region's largest vineyard owners and had a hand in Mateo's emergence as one of Spain's most closely watched growers. The wine is an equal blend of Dona Blanca, Treixadura and Verdelho from mature, high-altitude vines in the Tamagos district, close to the border. Fermentation is with natural yeasts and the wine is raised entirely in tank on its lees, with no oak at all, which suits a white built on freshness and grip rather than weight. What comes out is a bright, savoury southern Galician white with pulpy flesh, mouth-watering length and a little phenolic bite on a racy finish.

Drink young and cold, at 10-12°C, with grilled sardines, salt cod fritters or a green salad with sheep's cheese.
