Description
Candea Tinto is the entry-level red from Quinta da Muradella, drawn from a friend's vineyards in Monterrei.
Candea comes from the Monterrei holdings of Juan Jose Vilela, a long-standing friend of Jose Luis Mateo and now his collaborator; the Vilela family was once among the largest vineyard owners in the region and played a part in Mateo's own emergence as a grower. Mateo advises on the viticulture through the season and organises the harvest with his own picking team. The blend is led by Mencia, with a group of other local varieties including Garnacha Tintorera, Mouraton and Arauxa, the Monterrei name for Tempranillo, all from mature vines at 400 to 450 metres. Fermentations are spontaneous and include roughly a third whole bunches, and much of the maturation takes place in stainless steel, which keeps the fruit direct and the tannins light. Mateo treats this as the house bistro red, and it is built and priced accordingly.
Drink it young, and do not be afraid to give it twenty minutes in the fridge first. Serve at around 16°C with charcuterie, empanadas or grilled sausages.
