Description
Cantina D'Arcy Barolo Preda is a whole-bunch, Burgundy-inflected Barolo from an east-facing parcel at the end of the Bussia valley.
Preda lies between Cannubi and Vignane in the commune of Barolo, at the end of the Bussia valley. The parcel worked by Andrew Myers faces east at the top of the hill, where thin Sant'Agata soils carry a high proportion of active lime. That combination of exposure and rocky soil accounts for much of the wine's aromatic, mineral-edged character. The rest lies in the winemaking, which reads more like Burgundy than Barolo: 55 per cent whole bunches, 18 days on skins, then 18 months on fine lees in a thick-staved Garbellotto botti with no racking and a late malolactic fermentation, before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The result is built on perfume, opening with red fruits and flowers and building depth, dark cherry and spice with air, closer in feel to old-vine Chambolle than to a conventional reading of the appellation.
Give it plenty of air now, or five to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom pasta or soft washed-rind cheeses.
