Description
Cantine Cellaro Etna Rosso DOC is a volcanic red from the northern slope of Mount Etna in Sicily, made from Nerello Mascalese with a little Nerello Cappuccio.
Etna is unlike the rest of Sicily. The vineyards climb the slopes of an active volcano, on black lava soils, at altitudes where the nights are cold and the harvest runs late. Cantina Cellaro is a growers' cooperative founded in 1970 at Sambuca di Sicilia in the west of the island, and its Etna wines come from a partnership with growers at Randazzo, on the volcano's northern slope. The blend is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio from bush vines forty to sixty years old, and the wine is aged for twelve months in French oak. Nerello Mascalese is pale in colour and firm in structure, and is often compared with Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir.
It suits grilled tuna or swordfish, roast pork, mushroom dishes and pasta alla Norma; serve at around 16 degrees.
