Description
Cascina Penna-Currado Timorasso Derthona Colli Tortonesi E.P. is a white from a Piedmontese grape that was nearly lost.
Timorasso grew in the Colli Tortonesi, the hills around Tortona in south-eastern Piedmont, until phylloxera and the postwar shift to easier varieties left barely a few hectares standing. A small group of growers brought it back from the 1980s under the name Derthona, the Roman name for the town, and it is now Piedmont's most serious white: thick-skinned, low-yielding and built to age rather than to charm. The Currado family, long associated with Barolo, work the fruit with a slow fermentation and extended time on lees in neutral vessels.
Serve at 10 to 12 degrees with rich fish, veal or hard cheese. Worth keeping five to eight years.
