Description
Castello di Neive Barbaresco Gallina DOCG is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from one of the best known crus in the village of Neive, at the eastern end of the Barbaresco zone.
Barbaresco is made entirely from Nebbiolo, grown on the calcareous marl hills that rise east of Alba across the communes of Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso and a small corner of Alba itself. Neive is the largest of them, and Gallina is among its most celebrated sites, a warm, well drained slope long bottled under its own name. Castello di Neive farms an extensive holding in the village and takes its name from the castle at its centre; the property has been in the hands of the Stupino family since the 1960s. Fermentation on skins is followed by maturation in oak casks and the long ageing that the DOCG requires before release.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at about 18C alongside braised beef, slow-cooked veal, mushroom risotto or hard alpine cheese; good bottles will hold for a decade or more.
