Description
Castello di Neive Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano is a long-aged Nebbiolo from the most storied vineyard site in the Piedmontese commune of Neive.
Santo Stefano lies within the Albesani cru in Neive, a sheltered, south-west facing curve of calcareous marl that has been singled out as a superior site for well over a century. The estate has farmed these rows for generations and historically sold fruit from them to other celebrated Barbaresco houses before bottling the vineyard under its own label. Riserva status calls for longer ageing than standard Barbaresco, at least four years from harvest with a substantial spell in cask, so these wines reach the market well after their peers. Nebbiolo is the sole grape, fermented on skins and matured in large oak before an extended rest in bottle.
Decant an hour or two ahead and serve at about 18C with braised or roasted red meat, game birds and well-aged hard cheese; it is built for the cellar and repays patience.
