Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2021

Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino is a pure Sangiovese red from the high north-western hills of Montalcino.

In 1984 the painter Sandro Chia bought a restored medieval fortress here, replanted the vineyards and made the estate as famous for its hand-painted labels as for what is in the bottle. Altitude and cooler air slow ripening, keeping the acidity and perfume this side of the hill is known for. The DOCG allows only Sangiovese Grosso. After an extended fermentation on skins, the wine spends at least two years in oak, mostly traditional Slavonian botti with some smaller casks, then more time in bottle.

Perfumed, not heavy, with red cherry, dried rose and a savoury finish on fine tannin. Decant an hour before pouring and serve at 16-18C with roast meats, wild mushrooms or aged Pecorino.
