Castello Romitorio 'Colto' Rosso di Montalcino 2021

Castello Romitorio 'Colto' Rosso di Montalcino is a bright, medium-bodied Sangiovese from the cooler north-western slopes of Montalcino in Tuscany.

The painter Sandro Chia bought this restored medieval castle in 1984, and his work still appears on the labels. The vines sit at altitude on the cool side of the hill, where a longer season keeps acidity in the fruit. It is the same grape and commune as Brunello with a shorter ageing requirement, and the estate treats it as a wine in its own right: hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in large oak casks that shape it without adding oak flavour.

Sour cherry, dried herbs and a fine grip. Serve at 16-18°C with tomato-based pasta, roast chicken or charcuterie; a short decant does no harm.
