Catena Zapata Birth of Cabernet 2022

Catena Zapata Birth of Cabernet is a high-altitude Cabernet Sauvignon from Mendoza whose label tells the story of how the grape came to be.

Cabernet Sauvignon began as a chance crossing: somewhere in the vineyards of south-west France, pollen passed between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, and a new variety was born. The Catena family's label imagines the scene, with a bee carrying pollen between the flowers, a vineyard abandoned during war and a vintner who returns years later, tastes the grapes of a strange new vine and falls in love. In the bottle, Cabernet Sauvignon is joined by a portion of its parent Cabernet Franc, grown in the family's mountain vineyards in Mendoza.

Serve at around 17 degrees after an hour in a decanter. Roast lamb with rosemary, beef brisket or a rich eggplant parmigiana all suit it, and it has the structure to age.
