Description
Bricco Boschis is Cavallotto's home hill in Castiglione Falletto, a near-monopole the family has owned since 1928.
Barolo is made from Nebbiolo across eleven communes in the Langhe, and Castiglione Falletto sits at the centre of the zone. The Cavallottos bought the Bricco Boschis estate in 1928 and were the first growers in the commune to vinify all their own fruit, in 1946, bottling their first Barolo in 1948; the fourth generation — Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura — runs the 25-hectare property today, still using only estate fruit. The hill faces south to south-west on calcareous marl at around 300 metres and is divided into three parcels, Punta Marcello, Colle Sud-Ovest and the central San Giuseppe, which is bottled separately as a Riserva. Farming has been free of synthetic pesticides since 1976, using predatory mites and cover crops. Fermentation is with indigenous yeasts in large stainless steel vats, with twenty to thirty-five days on skins, and ageing is in large Slavonian oak casks rather than barriques.
Give it five years and cellar for twenty. Decant and serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, mushroom risotto or aged hard cheese.
