Description
Bricco Boschis is the hill at Castiglione Falletto that the Cavallotto family have owned since 1928 and farm in its entirety.
Castiglione Falletto sits in the middle of the Barolo zone, and Bricco Boschis is a single contiguous ridge of calcareous marl at around three hundred metres, effectively a monopole. Giacomo Cavallotto bought the property in 1928; his sons Olivio and Gildo were the first growers in the commune to vinify all of their own fruit, in 1946, and bottled their first Barolo in 1948. The fourth generation - Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura - now run the roughly twenty-five hectare estate, using only estate-grown grapes and farming organically. The winemaking is deliberately traditional: fermentation with indigenous yeasts, a semi-submerged cap with punchdowns, macerations running from a fortnight to nearly a month, and long ageing in large Slavonian oak casks rather than barriques, generally two to four years depending on the wine. The Vigna San Giuseppe riserva comes from a parcel within the same hill and is given the longest maceration and cask ageing of all.
This needs time and benefits from decanting; serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, truffle dishes or an aged hard cheese.
