Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe in magnum, from the steep parcel that sits directly behind the cantina.

Vigna San Giuseppe is a 3.7-hectare parcel within the Bricco Boschis cru at Castiglione Falletto, long regarded as the sweet spot of the vineyard. It has altitude, but not too much; excellent drainage, yet enough water retention from clay that the vines do not stress in a dry season; and a complex mixture of soils. Blue-tinted clays bring power, limestone adds freshness and mineral drive, and sand delivers prettiness and perfume. Especially small bunches from 60-year-old vines, unique clonal material and a south-west exposure complete the equation. This Riserva spent 28 days on skins followed by five years in large cask, the traditional Cavallotto regime. Where the Riserva Vignolo has more vertical lift and minerality, Vigna San Giuseppe is the wine of ballast and texture.

Magnum slows the ageing curve further, so this will hold and improve over two to three decades. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, game or a Piedmontese cheese board.
