Description
The Riserva from the best-sited parcel of Bricco Boschis, the Castiglione Falletto hill the Cavallotto family has farmed since 1928.
Castiglione Falletto sits at the centre of the Barolo zone, where the sandier soils to the west meet the firmer marls to the east, and its wines tend to combine perfume with structure. Giacomo Cavallotto bought the Boschis estate in 1928 and his sons Olivio and Gildo bottled the first wine under the family name in 1948; the fourth generation, Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura, runs it now. The property is 23 contiguous hectares of calcareous marl at close to 300 metres, entirely estate-owned and farmed organically, with Bricco Boschis effectively a monopole divided into named parcels including San Giuseppe, Punta Marcello and Colle Sudovest. Vigna San Giuseppe is bottled only as a Riserva: indigenous-yeast fermentation, twenty to thirty-five days of maceration under a submerged cap, four to five years in Slavonian oak casks and a further twelve months in bottle before release.
Released with age already on it but still built for the long haul, and worth decanting. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, game birds or aged hard cheeses.
