Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe 2015

Vigna San Giuseppe is the best-sited section of Cavallotto's Bricco Boschis, bottled only as a Riserva and named for the family's father.

Bricco Boschis is a hill on the eastern side of Castiglione Falletto, effectively a Cavallotto monopole, sitting at around 300 metres on the calcareous marl that runs through the commune. The family arrived in 1928 with Giacomo Cavallotto; Olivio and Gildo made the first bottling in 1948, single-vineyard labelling began in 1970, and the Vignolo cru was added in 1989. The fourth generation, Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura, farm 23 contiguous hectares organically. The house style is firmly traditional: a maceration of around twenty-six days on the skins, malolactic fermentation and a period of maturation in cement, then four years in large neutral Slavonian oak botti rather than barriques, followed by further time in bottle before the wine is released, well beyond the minimum the Riserva rules require.

Built for the very long term; give it a decade at least, and decant generously if opened sooner. Serve with braised beef, game or truffle dishes at 16-18°C.
