Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe in three-litre double magnum, from the steep parcel behind the estate cellar.

Vigna San Giuseppe is a 3.7-hectare parcel within the Bricco Boschis cru at Castiglione Falletto, long considered the sweet spot of the vineyard. It has altitude without excess, excellent drainage but enough water retention from clay to keep the vines from stressing in dry years, and a complex mixture of soils. Blue-tinted clays bring power, limestone adds freshness and mineral drive, and sand gives the prettiness and perfume. Small bunches from 60-year-old vines, unusual clonal material and a south-west exposure complete the picture. This Riserva spent 28 days on skins followed by five years in large cask, in the traditional manner Cavallotto has maintained for generations. Where the Riserva Vignolo shows more vertical lift and minerality, Vigna San Giuseppe is about ballast and texture.

The slower maturation of a double magnum suits a wine of this build, and it should reward cellaring for several decades. Serve at 16-18°C with a large roast, braised beef or aged hard cheeses.
