Description
Vignolo is Cavallotto's Barolo Riserva from Castiglione Falletto, the first single-vineyard bottling ever made from that cru.
The Cavallotto family acquired 60% of the historic Vignolo cru in 1989 and was the first to bottle it on its own. Their holding is a 1.9-hectare parcel on a ridge of south-west facing vines that runs with Codana and Monprivato, sitting 60 to 80 metres below Bricco Boschis; their only neighbour here is Paolo Scavino. Vignolo carries some of the highest limestone content of any site in Castiglione Falletto, and the estate's vines were planted between 1948 and 1966. Vine age, organic farming and that limestone combine to give gentle structure, clean fruit and a seductive texture rather than sheer weight. The wine spent 25 days on skins and then five years in large, neutral cask before release. It is not a lesser wine than Vigna San Giuseppe, simply a different reading of the same commune, and generally the more openly expressive of the two Riservas.
Approachable earlier than most Barolo Riserva, though the cellaring potential should not be underestimated. Decant and serve at 16-18°C with brasato, roast game or aged Castelmagno.
