Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo 2018

Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo comes from a Castiglione Falletto cru that the family was the first to bottle on its own.

Vignolo forms a ridge of south-west-facing vines in Castiglione Falletto, running alongside Codana and Monprivato and lying 60 to 80 metres below Bricco Boschis. Its soils carry some of the highest limestone content in the commune. In 1989 the Cavallotto family acquired 60 per cent of the historic cru and became the first to bottle it as a single-vineyard wine; the estate's 1.9-hectare parcel is planted to vines set down between 1948 and 1966, with Paolo Scavino the only neighbour. Old vines, that limestone terroir and organic farming combine to give gentle structure, fruit purity and a seductive texture rather than sheer weight. The wine spent 25 days on skins and then five years in large, neutral cask, the traditional Cavallotto regime. It is not a lesser wine than the Vigna San Giuseppe Riserva, simply a different reading of Castiglione Falletto.

Generally the more approachable and youthfully expressive of the estate's two Riservas, though it will cellar for two decades. Serve at 16-18°C with braised veal shank, truffle pasta or aged Castelmagno.
