Cayuse God Only Knows Grenache 2020

Cayuse God Only Knows Grenache is a Grenache-led red from the Armada vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley.

Grenache is an unlikely bet this far north, and it works because of the ground. The vineyard lies in the ancient bed of the Walla Walla River, with barely a foot and a half of silty loam and basalt cobbles over compacted stone that plunges as deep as a hundred metres, conditions closer to the southern Rhône than to Oregon. Christophe Baron, who came here from a Champagne farming family, planted the site in 2001 and farms it organically and biodynamically, with yields held under 30 hectolitres per hectare. Whole clusters make up three-quarters of the natural ferment in concrete, and the wine then spends twenty-one months in large old French foudres.

Raspberry, dried herb and white pepper, with a savoury undertow and tannins that stay supple. Serve a touch cool, around 16 degrees. Roast chicken with garlic, grilled quail, or lamb shoulder with rosemary and roast potatoes alongside.
