Cellier Saint Benoit Arbois Pupillin Courbes Raies Chardonnay 2022

Cellier Saint Benoit Courbes Raies Chardonnay comes from vines planted in 1990 on a band of fossil-rich Triassic limestone.

Courbes Raies takes its curving name from the shape of the vineyard, and the Chardonnay here shares the site with the domaine's Pinot Noir. Where the richer clays shape Benjamin Benoit's wines from La Marcette and Viandris, these vines sit on limestone littered with the fossilised gryphée molluscs that give the local calcaire à gryphées its name, with more sand mixed into the clay. The vines are a touch younger than elsewhere on the estate, planted in 1990. Handling is identical across all the domaine's Chardonnays so that the parcels can be judged against each other: whole bunches pressed into used 600-litre barrels, fermentation and 12 months on lees, then the gross lees decanted off and six months on clean lees in stainless steel before unfiltered bottling. The result is layered and fleshy but finishes saline and fine-boned, which is the clarity Benjamin is aiming for.

Drinking well now and good for the best part of a decade; serve at 10–12°C with roast fish, veal blanquette or a plate of Comté.
