Cellier Saint Benoit Arbois Pupillin La Marcette Chardonnay 2022

Cellier Saint Benoit La Marcette Chardonnay comes from 65- to 70-year-old vines on Triassic marl at the top of a hill in the south of Pupillin.

Benjamin Benoit farms half a hectare in La Marcette, at 335 metres on the way towards Poligny. The soil is Triassic marl, a chalky clay, and the vines, planted by his grandfather, sit on the plateau of the hill directly above Les Charots and opposite the village. Despite the proximity the two wines could hardly be less alike: the sunnier Marcette parcels ripen considerably earlier and give a golden, aromatic wine where Les Charots is focused and chiselled. Winemaking is the same across all the estate's Chardonnays so that the sites can be compared directly: whole bunches pressed into used 600-litre barrels, fermentation and 12 months on lees, then six further months on clean lees in stainless steel before bottling without filtration. This is the deepest and most powerful of the range, rich and fleshy with real length.

A gastronomic wine that will hold for a decade; serve at 10–12°C with rich poultry and pork dishes or a thick slice of well-aged Comté.
