Cellier Saint Benoit Arbois Pupillin Viandris Chardonnay 2022

Cellier Saint Benoit Viandris Chardonnay comes from 60-year-old vines on the west-facing, limestone-rich flank of the Viandris slope.

Viandris lies below the hilltop village of Pupillin, and where the domaine's Ploussard vines there face north, the Chardonnay occupies the west-facing side at a relatively high 368 metres in intensely limestone-rich soil. The vines were planted by Benjamin Benoit's grandfather around 60 years ago and their deep roots produce low yields, which is where the depth and energy of the wine come from. The winemaking is deliberately identical across all the domaine's Chardonnays so that the differences between parcels come through: whole bunches pressed into used 600-litre barrels for fermentation and 12 months of lees ageing, after which the gross lees are decanted off and the wine rests on clean lees in stainless steel for a further six months, allowing bottling without filtration. A wisp of smoky reduction sits alongside the wine's drive.

Drinking well now and good for five to eight years; serve at 10–12°C with roast poultry, grilled fish or a mushroom tart.
