Description
Cep by Cep Anjou Blanc is a dry Chenin Blanc grown on organically farmed schist at Rochefort-sur-Loire, directly across the river from Savennières.
Anjou Blanc is the Loire's broadest appellation for dry Chenin Blanc, and its better sites lie in the Anjou Noir, where dark schist and other metamorphic rocks of the Massif Armoricain replace the limestone found further upstream. This wine is grown at Rochefort-sur-Loire, just south of the Loire and opposite Savennières, on the schist-rich, volcanic soils that give the dry Chenin of the area its pungent, stony bite. The vineyards are farmed organically and the fruit is picked entirely by hand, with Philippe Germain overseeing the viticulture. Vinification is split between stainless steel tank and 400-litre casks of two to four years of age, so the wine keeps its clarity of fruit while picking up a little breadth and texture from the wood. The result is a dry, savoury Chenin at an everyday price.
Drink it over the next three or four years with grilled fish, roast pork or a washed-rind cheese. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
