ChaLou Syrah Orange 2023

ChaLou Syrah Orange is a peppery, medium-bodied Shiraz from Orange, labelled with the French name to flag its cooler style.

Cold nights on the slopes of Mount Canobolas ripen the grape slowly, giving spice, dark berries and fine tannin instead of sheer power. In Australia that French name on the label usually signals this kind of aromatic take, a long way from the rich reds of the Barossa or McLaren Vale. The winemaking is light-handed, with French oak there as a frame, not the main event.

Dark berries and cracked pepper over fine tannins. Try it at 16–18°C with lamb, beef, sausages, mushrooms or hard cheeses. It's supple enough to enjoy young and will age for several years.
