ChaLou The Somm & The Winemaker Mourvèdre 2024

ChaLou The Somm & The Winemaker Mourvèdre is a savoury single-variety Mourvèdre grown around Canowindra in the Central Ranges of New South Wales.

West of the Great Dividing Range, the Lachlan Valley is better known for grazing and broadacre farming than for vineyards. Summers here are warm and dry, nights are cool and the soils are red loam, all of which suits Mediterranean grapes. The label comes from a collaboration between a sommelier and a winemaker who want wines that work at the table. Their choice is a late-ripening grape best known in Bandol and the southern Rhône for earthy, firmly structured reds.

Dark fruit and earthy notes, with tannins that are firm but approachable. Good with lamb shoulder, grilled mushrooms or a meaty casserole, served at 16–18°C.
