Champagne Agrapart Grand Cru Avizoise Blanc de Blancs 2012 Disg. Mar 19

Agrapart L'Avizoise is a grand cru blanc de blancs from old Chardonnay on the deeper clay soils of Avize, disgorged in March 2019.

Agrapart was founded in 1894 and has been run since 1984 by Pascal Agrapart, who studied in Bordeaux and expanded the holding from four hectares to around a dozen, split into some sixty small plots across the grand crus of Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry, planted about ninety per cent to Chardonnay. Herbicides gave way long ago to composts, manures and regular ploughing, and the estate was among the first in Champagne to bring draught horses back into the vineyard. L'Avizoise comes from fifty- to sixty-year-old vines on the clay-rich mid-slope of Avize, ground closer to Burgundian argilo-calcaire than to the pure chalk of neighbouring parcels, which is what gives this cuvée its breadth. The vintage wines ferment entirely in older 600-litre oak casks with native yeasts, complete malolactic conversion, age under cork, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered with a very low dosage.

Drinking well now and capable of further development in bottle. Serve at about 8°C, or a touch warmer, with roast poultry, scallops or a well-aged Comté.
