Champagne Agrapart Grand Cru Complantée NV Disg. July 2021

Complantée is Agrapart's cuvée from a single Avize parcel co-planted to the old Champagne varieties alongside Chardonnay, all picked and fermented as one wine.

Avize is a grand cru village in the Côte des Blancs given over almost entirely to Chardonnay, which makes a plot carrying Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Meunier something of a historical curiosity. The house was founded in 1894 by Arthur Agrapart; Pascal Agrapart has run it since 1984 and was joined by his son Ambroise in 2018, working ten to twelve hectares divided into some sixty parcels across Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry. Farming rests on composts and manures, homeopathic treatments and regular ploughing, some of it behind a draught horse. The Complantée fruit comes from the La Fosse parcel, where the varieties are interplanted rather than set out in blocks, so they ripen and are harvested together, in the manner of Champagne before the modern era. The wine ferments with native yeasts and is aged in oak casks, unfined and unfiltered, with a low dosage. This bottling was disgorged in July 2021.

Drinking well now and worth several years in the cellar; serve at about 8°C with roast chicken, richer fish dishes or a hard alpine cheese.
