Description
Vénus is a single parcel at Avize worked by foot and by a horse of the same name, and it is bottled with no dosage at all.
Agrapart is based at Avize in the Côte des Blancs, the grand cru heartland of Chardonnay in Champagne. Pascal Agrapart took over the twelve-hectare domaine in 1985 and has half of it in Avize itself; he ploughs mechanically, uses neither herbicide nor insecticide, and holds that three-quarters of a wine's quality comes from the roots. The Vénus parcel, La Fosse aux Pourceaux, lies on the lower slope, with chalk beneath the upper two-thirds of the coteau and deeper clay over chalk at the foot. No machine goes onto it - the work is done on foot and with the mare - so the soil stays light and uncompacted, and the vines were around half a century old at the time of this vintage. As a blanc de blancs it is entirely Chardonnay. The wine was aged sur lattes under a cork closure rather than a crown cap before being disgorged in March 2019, and it is finished brut nature.
Serve at around 8°C in a white-wine glass rather than a flute, with oysters, raw scallops, sashimi or roast chicken.
