Description
Champagne Bérêche et Fils Brut Réserve Vieilles Vignes Non Filtrée is the house's core cuvée, given the same barrel work and long lees ageing as many prestige bottlings, and offered here in three-litre double magnum.
Bérêche farms at Ludes on the Montagne de Reims and has become one of the reference points of the grower movement. This release is based on the 2020 vintage, which accounts for 65 per cent of the blend, the balance drawn from the two preceding years. It splits three ways: 35 per cent Pinot Noir from Ludes, Trépail and Ormes, 35 per cent Chardonnay from sites across the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne, and 30 per cent Meunier from Mareuil-le-Port. Ludes and Trépail supply the tension that offsets the depth of the Marne fruit and the reserve wines. Average vine age is 40 years. The hand-harvested fruit ferments naturally in barrel before ageing in barrel and tank, and the wine spends 36 months sur lattes before hand disgorgement with just under 6 g/L dosage.
Drinking well now and capable of a decade, all the more so in this format. Serve at around 8°C with oysters, roast chicken or a plate of charcuterie.
